Avance Media is pleased to present its 2024 10 NGOs Leading Community Empowerment in Africa, recognising those that have had an immense impact in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and climate change.
This year’s list highlights NGOs that emphasise community support, ensuring their work directly uplifts local populations.
The criteria used to evaluate and select these NGOs were as follows:
- Proven track record in education, health, agriculture, climate change, and economic empowerment.
- Availability of annual impact reports vetted by the selection team.
- Demonstrated impact in at least 10 African countries.
- Active partnerships with individuals, communities, and organizations.
- A minimum of five years of operation, with matched annual reports demonstrating consistent progress.
Avance Media’s selection of these 10 NGOs highlights their deep commitment to community support. Whether they are empowering women, building healthcare capacity, or providing education, each of these organizations has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to transforming the lives of Africa’s communities. 1. African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF)

3. CARE International

Merck Foundation works closely with partners that are First Ladies of Africa, Ministries of Health, Education, Information & Communication, Gender, Academia, Research Institutions, Media and Art in building healthcare capacity and addressing health, social & economic challenges in developing countries and under-served communities, making them a key player in Africa’s development.
Impact: Merck Foundation’s contribution to African healthcare has been substantial, with over 2000 scholarships provided to doctors from 52 countries in 44 critical and underserved specialties. Their “Merck Foundation More Than a Mother” campaign has raised awareness about infertility stigma. Merck Foundation’s focus on improving access to healthcare in rural areas has led to a stronger healthcare system and better health outcomes for millions. Moreover, their Educating Linda program supports the education of thousands of girls across Africa through scholarships, essential school items, and awareness campaigns.
6. Oxfam International
